Engineering a world where every child can walk safely
In 2025, Amend celebrated its milestone 20th anniversary: two decades of growth from a grassroots initiative into an internationally recognised champion of road safety. Today, we deliver data-driven, evidence-based programs that protect vulnerable children across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our 2025 Impact Report highlights the progress we have made in improving road safety across the continent, and outlines how we plan to continue with this goal moving forward.
The Challenges We Confront
Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death globally for children and young adults aged 5 to 29. Sub-Saharan Africa sustains the highest rates in the world, with 26.6 deaths per 100,000 population.
Infrastructure development drives economic growth, but these developments frequently prioritise vehicular speed over pedestrian safety. This forces millions of children and other vulnerable road users to navigate high-risk traffic simply to access their right to education, livelihoods and services.
Amend addresses this crisis directly, by providing public authorities and international lenders with the technical capacity to design and construct human-centric, safe transport corridors.
Flagship Program: Safe Schools Africa
Safe Schools Africa is Amend’s overarching continental flagship program and our centralized vehicle for scaling safe infrastructure across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The program uses a people-centered design approach to prioritise human lives. Safe Schools Africa works alongside governments, development banks, and road contractors, providing technical assistance to ensure safe infrastructure is integrated throughout the lifecycle of large-scale road projects.
By physically separating pedestrians from vehicular lanes and lowering impact speeds via traffic calming measures, we drastically reduce the risks to children and vulnerable road users. Our underlying methodology is scientifically proven to reduce the number and severity of child pedestrian traffic injuries.
The Multiplier Effect
Through Safe Schools Africa, Amend leverages dedicated donor contributions to unlock large capital allocations for school zone improvements, via funds in the development bank loans and grants to governments. The table below shows the leverage to date:

Our Impact in Numbers
Building safer roads is only part of the job. In 2025, Amend also ran driver-education courts staffed by school children, trained motorcycle taxi riders, and used drone and AI-driven data to identify the most dangerous school routes. And this work is led locally: over 85% of Amend’s staff are African professionals based permanently in the regions where we operate.
Together, we reached tens of thousands of people:
- We delivered road safety education to 95,000 school children and over 13,000 community members across eight Tanzanian regions along the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) corridor.
- We trained over 250 motorcycle taxi riders in communities near pipeline construction sites, and developed a new safety curriculum for commercial riders.
- Around 59,000 children from 45 schools took part in “Be Road Safe Africa” activities across Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
- We protected over 6,000 students daily through 6 full Safe School Zone transformations completed in Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal.
- We piloted safety enhancements for Tanzania’s Traffic Police-led Junior Patrol, cutting the rate of drivers failing to stop near schools from 22% to 8%.
Amend’s operations in 2025 were largely supported by our core funding partners: FIA Foundation, Agence Française de Développement, World Bank, TYPSA Foundation, Cotswold Foundation, EACOP Community Road Safety Programme and Puma Energy Foundation.
Future Projects
Regional demand for Amend’s technical expertise now exceeds our current capacity. To continue to effectively support the communities we serve, we are planning new partnerships and activities in 2026, including:
- a new francophone office in Côte d’Ivoire
- large-scale, multi-country safe school infrastructure projects with Agence Française de Développement and Bloomberg Philanthropies
- the launch of a formal research division
