From September 2023 to August 2024, Amend, with support from the Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania, executed a comprehensive road safety initiative targeting motorcycle safety for young people in Tanga and Dodoma. Building on prior efforts funded by Fondation Botnar, this project focused on improving motorcycle safety and creating safer environments for vulnerable road users.

Key achievements include:

  • Training 902 motorcycle taxi riders on safe riding practices and first aid.
  • Conducting a widespread awareness campaign, reaching thousands through 198 social media posts, 30 TV/radio segments, and 11 newspaper features.
  • Launching a Boda-Boda Code of Conduct with practical safety slogans and distributing over 850 reflective jackets, posters, and branded materials.
  • Establishing Safe School Zones around two schools, introducing footpaths, zebra crossings, speed humps, and safety signage to protect over 1,500 children.

Evaluations demonstrated increased safety knowledge, behavior changes among riders, and reduced vehicle speeds near schools. The initiative enhanced collaborations with local authorities and communities, fostering a culture of road safety in Tanzania.
