Road traffic crashes kill nearly 1.2 million people each year, with more than 90 percent of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. We are addressing this crisis through proven interventions in road design, pedestrian safety, and local capacity building.
Amend is partnering with Bloomberg Philanthropies to deliver the following activities in each of Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia over 18 months:
- Safe Schools Demonstration Projects: Improving infrastructure around three high-risk schools, creating model sites for pedestrian-safe road design. Showcasing these through ribbon-cutting events to drive advocacy and influence government authorities toward best practice.
- Safe Schools Assistance Projects: Providing direct assistance to roads project teams on three major development bank financed roads projects, increasing the capacity of the teams to ensure the roads are designed and constructed with a focus on pedestrian safety.
- Capacity Building and Mentorship: Identification and training of six “champions” from within the roads project teams, enabling them to lead the focus on pedestrian safety on roads projects.
